Before he was building companies in blockchain and artificial intelligence, Trevor Koverko was an elite hockey prospect who accomplished his childhood dream of being drafted by the NHL. But after a life-changing car accident brought an abrupt end to his career, Trevor reinvented himself as an entrepreneur and early-stage investor. He has gone on to found and back some of the most talked-about projects in crypto, from early security token infrastructure to today’s AI data networks. Along the way, he has built a reputation for spotting structural shifts early and having the patience to build through them. This interview traces the journey from grinding on the ice to staying competitive in entirely new arenas.
Q: Tell me about growing up being a hockey kid in Toronto.
TREVOR KOVERKO: Playing hockey in Toronto was all-consuming. My life revolved around the rink from a really early age. Early mornings before school, well into the night, and games and tournaments most weekends. I loved most of it, mainly the push to get better and seeing the results pay off with my team. I learned quickly that talent alone is not enough. I was also learning accountability, because my teammates were relying on me, and me on them. If I didn’t show up ready and prepared, everyone felt it. Over time, I started to see myself as someone who was aiming to be elite. That mindset stays with you.
Q: When did you know you could go pro?
TREVOR KOVERKO: When I was on traveling teams and making stars of the game against the top players my age, I started to let myself dream a little bigger. I was testing myself and passing a lot of the tests. I was becoming a leader, and my confidence was building in a real way. I’d put in the hours and made all the sacrifices, and I was rewarded on draft night, which was probably the most thrilling moment of my life ot that point. It was a payoff for all those years of hoping and working hard.
Q: How did you maintain mental strength through your accident and recovery?
TREVOR KOVERKO: It was really tough at first, of course, to deal with a major brain injury and lose all I’d worked for in hockey. I was partially paralyzed and spent months in the ICU, and had to relearn how to walk and talk, basically. But I treated recovery like a job, and part of it was finding somewhere new to focus all that mental energy I’d given to hockey. I found it pretty quickly, while still in the hospital, watching entrepreneurial videos on YouTube. I clung to those possibilities and started to foresee myself as someone who could spot opportunities in traditional business models, and new technologies were converging. I received a business degree from Ivey Business School at Western University and have been creating and backing companies ever since.
Q: What led you to create Polymath in 2017?
TREVOR KOVERKO: I was spending a lot of time looking at blockchain and traditional finance side by side. It became obvious that financial securities were slow, expensive, and restricted by outdated systems. At the same time, blockchain was offering efficiency and transparency, but it was missing real-world compliance. Polymath came from wanting to solve that problem. The idea was about building infrastructure that institutions and regulators could actually use. I believed securities would eventually move on-chain, and I wanted to help build the tools to make that transition possible in a practical way.
Q: How do you envision Sapien fit into the AI boom?
TREVOR KOVERKO: Sapien is another chapter of reinvention for me. AI is moving incredibly fast, but one of its biggest constraints is access to high-quality human data. That problem is only getting bigger as AI scales. We are building a decentralized system that connects people around the world directly to AI development. It is about efficiency, fairness, and scale. Personally, it fits my pattern of being willing to build new strengths and learn new skills when the environment changes. I enjoy starting again, staying competitive, and pushing myself to be elite in new fields.
