Yet, there are definite qualities of an entrepreneur \u2013 ways we tend to think and act.<\/p>\n Although there is no entrepreneurial gene, we are either born with or not. I know that successful and aspiring entrepreneurs think and act similarly \u2014 no matter how different we are as individuals \u2013 they think like entrepreneurs.<\/p>\n Some entrepreneurs want to change the world. Others want to make money online<\/a> and provide a better life for themselves and their families. Some of us want to do both.<\/p>\n While spending the last 15 years in business myself, reading business books<\/a> to study entrepreneurs, and interviewing 483 of them for the podcast<\/a> \u2014 I\u2019ve boiled down these conversations to five characteristics<\/strong> that all successful entrepreneurs have.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n And no, I won’t tell you to hustle and have a positive attitude. This is about acquiring new skills and cultivating a mindset of success. My goal is to make this as action-oriented as possible. <\/p>\n Here are the five characteristics of nourishing an entrepreneurial success mindset<\/strong>:<\/p>\n To succeed as an entrepreneur, you must learn to look at a problem or situation, digest all available data (at that point in time), and make a confident decision to move forward.<\/p>\n Your decision-making ability will make or break<\/strong> your future successes.<\/p>\n In fact, on the opposite end, indecision is one of the greatest causes of business failure.<\/p>\n When you can\u2019t decide what to do, you delay taking action. In other words, you do nothing. Think about how many dreams (and businesses) failing to take action<\/strong> has killed.<\/p>\n Like many other skills an entrepreneur needs, being decisive is a skill that can (and should) be practiced and strengthened in your day-to-day life \u2014 starting with the tiniest decisions. <\/p>\n This can seem trivial or unnecessary, but it absolutely isn\u2019t.<\/p>\n Being decisive takes practice to master, and it begins with small decisions<\/strong> in the business of daily life.<\/p>\n From here, you can build on your decisiveness and begin to use it in bigger and bigger ways.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n You must learn many skills to accomplish everything you want in life.<\/p>\n But how do you act confidently when you don\u2019t know what you are doing?<\/strong><\/p>\n You learn to act with confidence, the second characteristic of the entrepreneurial mindset. And one of the most important qualities of an entrepreneur.<\/p>\n It is essential that you get used to the uncomfortable feeling of knowing that you don’t know what you\u2019re doing.<\/p>\n Whether it’s getting on stage to speak<\/a>, launching your product, or learning how to start a blog<\/a> and publishing your business ideas out to the world, we tend to see others doing it and incorrectly assume they’ve always been good at it.<\/p>\n They weren’t born knowing how to speak confidently, launch successful products, or write excellent books. They also weren’t born knowing how to become entrepreneurs.<\/p>\n They learned,<\/strong> and we can, too.<\/p>\n The difference between appearing good or bad at something is often a matter of acting confidently.<\/p>\n Looking confident, practiced, and skilled is what we admire in others. But looking confident and being confident are two different things<\/strong>. Seriously.<\/p>\n Acting confident while getting on stage to give a speech to a packed room, even when your hands are violently shaking, is essential to learn the art of public speaking.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n This works with everything. Here\u2019s what I mean.<\/p>\n Do you want to be a podcaster?<\/a> Start podcasting.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n Do you want to become a professional chef? Start cooking.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n Do you want to be a copywriter? Start writing sales pages that convert.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/li>\n Do you have side hustle ideas<\/a> you want to start? Stop watching Netflix every night.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n Do you want to learn email marketing<\/a>? Start building your email list today.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n Pretending you are good at something will enable you to do it confidently enough times until you become good at it<\/strong>.<\/p>\n The more you do this, the better you will become. It\u2019s counterintuitive, but it works every time. And if you aren’t quite ready to take this leap, here are some motivational quotes<\/a> to kick you in the ass.<\/p>\n The entrepreneurial mindset comes from taking responsibility for your own business, actions and outcomes.<\/p>\n You need to internalize and accept that:<\/p>\n Everything that happens at work \u2013 YOU are responsible for.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Everything that happens to your business \u2013 YOU are responsible for.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Whether you succeed or fail, it is YOUR responsibility.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n From this moment forward, you must accept responsibility for everything in your life and hold yourself accountable<\/strong> for it.<\/p>\n Sorry to tell you, but nobody cares how little time, money, or external support you have to accomplish your goals. Your circumstances may not be your fault, but they are your responsibility.<\/p>\n All that matters is what you are doing RIGHT NOW to find your success.<\/strong><\/p>\n There are no more excuses<\/strong>. Accountability is required of entrepreneurs as well as successful businesses and employees. Stop passing the buck and blaming others.<\/p>\n Hold yourself accountable \u2013 even when you aren\u2019t to blame \u2013 and take action to fix the problem.<\/p>\n The entrepreneurial mindset requires you to take complete control and hold yourself accountable to your good and bad outcomes. As James Altucher<\/a> said on the podcast, life is a sentence of failures punctuated with brief successes.<\/p>\n As an entrepreneur, you must learn to deal with making mistakes and failing. They are inevitable and a part of your growth.<\/p>\n If every misstep plummets you into self-doubt, you must change your perception of being wrong.<\/p>\n This mindset shift<\/strong> takes resilience and is foundational to the entrepreneurial mindset.<\/p>\n Success rarely happens in a straight line. Taking wrong turns and making mistakes is something that happens to everyone.<\/p>\n “The only people who don\u2019t make mistakes are the ones who don\u2019t do anything.”<\/p>\n \u2013 My Dad to me a hundred times as a kid.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n Resilience<\/a> isn\u2019t only helpful when dealing with catastrophic mistakes. It\u2019s a way to handle the small, simple decisions you\u2019ve made that didn\u2019t turn out right.<\/p>\n Resilience enables you to think, act, and move iteratively \u2014 making small, incremental corrections along the way.<\/p>\n With the Atlantic Ocean on the right, there\u2019s bound to be a strong wind pushing it westward<\/strong> (or to the left).<\/p>\n As the pilot, you set a trajectory north to Boston upon departure. Yet you are beginning to get slightly off course with the wind blowing.<\/p>\n Do you keep plowing ahead<\/strong> as planned and end up in Chicago instead?<\/p>\n Or do you continually and incrementally correct your course<\/strong> against the wind and turbulence?<\/p>\n The answer is obvious. You must constantly fight against external forces or <\/strong>never reach your destination.<\/p>\n You need to be resilient to change and keep pushing ahead no matter what may try and knock you off course.<\/p>\n There is no straight line to where you are going.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n Humility is freedom from pride or arrogance, and it ties all of the characteristics of entrepreneurship.<\/p>\n From decisiveness to confidence, humility will keep you focused and centred<\/strong>.<\/p>\n From accountability to resilience, you will continue progressing through failure, mistakes, and upsets.<\/p>\n This is accomplished with humility.<\/p>\n “If you are the smartest person in the room, you are in the wrong room.”<\/p>\n<\/p>\n \u2013 Someone smarter than me.<\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n Along with humility comes coachability \u2014 the ability to be coached.<\/p>\n If you want to accomplish big things in life, you need to be willing to learn from others<\/strong> and nourish a growth mindset.<\/p>\n To do big things, you need to grow. To grow, you need to learn.<\/p>\n No matter what you are trying to accomplish, someone already has done it before you.<\/p>\n Thinking like an entrepreneur means seeking out mentors and coaches who have been where you are trying to go \u2014 and having the humility to accept their guidance.<\/p>\n There are so many misconceptions about entrepreneurship and starting a business, and it\u2019s no wonder there is so much doubt (and so little confidence).<\/p>\n A few common misconceptions that need to be dispelled are:<\/p>\n Entrepreneurs are born hustlers<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n You need a unique (and revolutionary) idea to be successful<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Starting an online business requires technical skills<\/p>\n<\/li>\n You can\u2019t succeed without full-time effort<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n To be clear, mastering your entrepreneurial mindset is not easy.
